Pick a breed to convert your dog’s age into human years and see how long that breed actually lives. The life expectancy figures come from McMillan et al., Scientific Reports, 2024, which followed 584,734 dogs through UK veterinary records — 284,734 of them deceased.

How much does breed actually change the answer?

More than the four size bands on the calculator can express, and less than the internet usually claims. Size is a genuinely good predictor: across every possible pairing of a small breed against a large one in this dataset — 2,976 of them — the large breed is the longer-lived of the two only 13% of the time.

But the bands overlap heavily at the edges. Small breeds here run from 9.3 years (Affenpinscher) to 15.4 (Lancashire Heeler) — a six-year spread inside a single band. A Labrador Retriever, firmly a large breed at a median of 13.1 years, outlives 21 of the 62 small breeds on this page. A Chihuahua, at 11.8, is outlived by 20 of the 48 large ones.

So the size band gets you most of the way and the breed row gets you the rest. Both are population medians either way, which is the next section.

Why some breeds show as “large” when they are clearly bigger

The study recognises three body sizes — small, medium and large — and has no giant category. Its “large” group therefore holds both the Labrador Retriever and the Great Dane, whose medians are 13.1 and 10.6 years respectively. Whiskerclock’s own calculator does have a fourth band, but the paper contains no weight data to assign breeds to it, so inventing one here would mean citing a source that does not support it.

The lookup above therefore fills in the study’s category and leaves the control unlocked. For a dog over 90 lb, switching to Giant yields the figure the rest of the site uses.

Flat faces cost more than a few months

Nineteen of these breeds are brachycephalic — the flat-faced skull shape of the Bulldog, Pug and French Bulldog. Their median life expectancy is 11.6 years, against 13.1 for the 100 mesocephalic breeds with conventional muzzles. The Bulldog and the French Bulldog both sit at 9.8, among the shortest-lived breeds in the dataset at any size.

Crossbreeds land in the middle

The 183,498 crossbred dogs in the dataset have a median life expectancy of 12.0 years. That is above the large-breed median of 11.4 and below the small-breed median of 13.3 — unremarkable, and a poor fit for the popular claim that mixed ancestry confers a decisive longevity advantage. Crossbreeds outlive plenty of pedigrees and are outlived by plenty of others.

The Poodle problem

Poodles are absent from the lookup, and the reason is instructive. Toy, miniature and standard poodles are recorded as one breed in UK veterinary records but span three body sizes, so the study assigns the breed no size at all. Its median of 14.0 years across 8,826 dogs is a blend of three very different animals, and there is no honest way to route it through a size-banded formula. The same caution applies more quietly to any breed with a toy or miniature variety.

What these numbers are

Each figure is a median: the age by which half the dogs of that breed had died. It is not a prediction for an individual dog, and it describes UK dogs recorded between 2016 and 2020 rather than dogs everywhere. Breeds with few dogs in the dataset carry wide confidence intervals — the shortest median on the page, 5.4 years for the Caucasian Shepherd Dog, rests on 74 dogs, and 13 breeds have too few recorded deaths for the upper bound of the interval to be reached at all. The lookup shows the interval and the sample size alongside every figure for that reason.

The “in human years” column applies Whiskerclock’s size-banded conversion to each breed’s median lifespan, so it answers “how old is a typical dog of this breed at the end of its life, in human terms?” Larger breeds age faster per calendar year, which is why a Labrador reaching 13.1 lands higher in human years than a Chihuahua reaching 11.8.
